February Spotlight: "Krush" Cancer
Cancer is a terrible, scary thing. I've lost loved ones to this disease and any time I hear someone has been diagnosed with cancer, I want to withdraw to a quiet place to hide and just be alone. When someone close to me asked to pray for one of their friends who was recently diagnosed with cancer, I balked. What I wanted to say was: "I'm not touching that." But instead, I found myself nodding and saying "Yes. Of course."
This friend of a friend was a local hockey player, originally from Ottawa, now playing on the West Coast. Mid-twenties, full of life and love for hockey. Now in the fight of his life. Due to the nature of his condition, he needed to pursue treatment in the US, where he has no health insurance to cover the costs. Treatment starts in the six-figure range before surgery even enters the picture. It brings up the sobering conversation surrounding the cost of a life. Yet through the diagnosis, the expenses, the prognosis, this individual maintained an upbeat, positive attitude. He posts updates on Twitter and has a vibrant faith that honestly puts mine to shame. His teammates, his community, his friends, have all rallied around him, raising money to put toward his medical expenses.
I know hockey usually promotes cancer awareness in October with Hockey Fights Cancer, and various teams/players participate in November's "Movember" movement, full of facial hair to raise money to fight cancer; but the fact of the matter is cancer doesn't save itself for October/November. Chances are you may know somebody right now fighting this disease. Ask yourself how you can help the person in your life fight cancer.
